New long interview on a swedish magazine Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

[Translated and extracted from Metallica forums]

Swedish Close-Up magazine.
The interview is made with Robert Trujillo:

Q: How is the new album going to sound?

A: The attitude of the new material is totally old school. Which has alot to do with us playing "MOP" live last year.
One thing that Rick Rubin said to Lars and James was; "When you are creating the songs, try and think about what was going throu your heads at the time when you made "MOP". Try and have the same attitude in the creative process."

Q: But how does it sound?

A: The songs are not going to be short. Your not going to hear any 4 min songs on this one. There is alot going on with diffrent harmonies and layers. Its hard for us who are up in it all creating to have a good perspective on it, but then you get some one from the outside like Scott Ian from Anthrax, who was waiting outside for me and Kirk. He heard us work on one of the new songs and said: "Wow, what a riff!!!!! Is it going to be on the new album?", he was clearly excited.

Q: So, is that riff going to be on the new album?

A: I actually dont remember (laughs), I cant remember that riff, but the song on the other hand. There are 14 songs, and we are not going to put so many on the record, so we dont know yet. There are some songs which we know with absolute certainty will make the album. There's alot of great riffs and cool grove to it, sometimes its very dynamic, I think this will be a really special album. We are still in a way writing these songs, on this tour James just came up with a fantastic riff, and it just has to make the new album, so in that sence the songs are still changing. And I got all these ideas on what I want to do with the bass. I think there is a creative magic going on in the group for this effort.

Q: Many people want to know if its gonna old "glories" thrash metal on the new record.

A: Yes! There are many diffrent musical inputs, and one of them is thrash. The dynamic elements Metallica used in the 80's are also a factor you will see on this record. There is also something that I think is a renewal of the heavyness, which is this Slayer-kind powergroove with a Metallica signature. The material is really heavy, even at the "groovie" parts, and alot of really strong melodies. The lyrics are also cool, I wasnt there under the recording of St.Anger, but there the Lyrics were made by everyone, this time its 100% James Hetfield. So the songs are more his then they were the last time, which is a good thing.

- Then there is something about Bob Rock getting fired and why they are now working with Rubin, and it goes on to.......
Q: And now there is "pre-Bob rock" philosophy.

A: Rick said this; James, why did you have a higher range on your singing voice before? Is it something you still can do? Can you still sing this song in this way?
I think that is fantastic, and I know alot of people will be surprised when they hear James on the new record. When songs are sung in an octave lower its easier for James, the voice hasnt the same agression and sounds more bluesy. Its good for James to get these kinds of suggestions, it forces him out from comfortable zone where he has been the past years, and this gives him a challenge. You can hear the old-school feeling in his voice now, just as back in the day.

Q: Many fans think that James voice isnt good enough these days, that it isnt nearly as good as it was before, is this something you guys discuss within the band?

A: Yes, and there are may reasons for James voice changing. The voice changes with age, but James.... Well, ok the voice isnt the same, when you are young you scream alot and have this attitude, the same attitude is more so in these new songs then it has been for in 20 years. These are things that Rick Rubin sees and wants us to work with, which has alot to do with the result of this album.

A: Another thing which people dont usually think about is the tuning. "Do you drop down a half step?", this dosent tell you much if you dont play an instrument. The vocals have a range and James is now using much of his register which he hasnt sung in for a long time. I personaly, and the rest of the band think that this is more in the lines of the "Old school" Metallica then that of the latest stuff. The vocals have a big part in the change/direction the music is going.
Now days many bands tune down to D, like Korn did, or to tune the E-string down to A. Early Metallica was never about this, it was about what I call A440, which is the standardtuning.

Q: "Invisible Kid" on St.Anger was really down-tuned.

A: Yeah, really. Rick thou not a fan of down-tuning. I dont have problem with it, Slayer down-tune in some song and they still sound brutal.

Then the interviewer talks about the two new songs, which he said, hade some great riffs; like the FWTB intro and strong riffing in the end, but had alot of boring riffs and parts that didnt go anywhere..... Etc etc. New song played in Bilbao, Rob said they fucked it up, you know the rest of that story.

Q: How was it to join Metallica? Do you think you joined Metallica at a perfect moment? If the new album lives up to its expectations then it will be like "Rubin and Trujillo saved Metallica" cry will replace the "Bob rock ruined Metallica".

A: I dont think it has ever been better to be in Metallica. If it had been 10-15 years ago I'm sure it would have been difficult to get along with Lars and James. The attitude within the band is healty, when I come with suggestions thye listen. Like when I said that it would be cool to play "Dyers Eve" live. What is cool is that when I joined the band they wanted to start playing old stuff, but this attitude didnt "Manifest" itself before the Filmore gig. I always say that the Filmore gig was 100% rehearsel.
We didnt do Dyers Eve this summer, but we have allready gone throu all our Metallica songs and picked some for the next tour, which we know are going to surprise.

Q: Under the Live Earth show you guys played bass with Spinal Tap, you pulled a bass solo and James said "Why dont you do that with our stuff!?". Can we count on you giving your mark in the music like Cliff Burton did with Orion, Anasteshia, FWTB and like Jason with MyFriendOfMissery?

A: I dont know...... Infectious Grooves was a cool experiment where all the music was written out from the bass. There will be moments like that, but the songs are still being "builded", so its not sure yet. As we play we come up with new stuff all the time, "WHOOOW that was cool, put that in there" and so on. Lars comes up with new fresh beats that change the attiude of the song and the arrangments. We dont know yet how the album will come out, there can be more bass there can be less.

Q: A couple of months ago you said that Kirk was away alot cuz of his son. How has this affected the dynamics of the work? You also talked about the working spirit between James and Lars..

A: Everyone who has been on the inside would describe it in the way I am going to right now: You can take a Robert Trujillo grove, a Jason Newstead bass line, or a Kirk Hammet riff - And I can promise you Kirk is contributing some of the worlds best riffs on this one - but when it comes down to it, there has been this amazing collaboration between James and Lars, to witness how those two guys are just really focused on making music, they brainstorm back and forth which creates a special energy. Its really inspirational to see how they work, how they pick everything appart and analyse the smallest details. From drum beats to changes in the chords to bridges and so on. Lars is really fantastic at arranging songs. Just the other day a friend asked me what Lars does besides shoot of his big mouth (laughs).

Q: What does he contribute specifically?

A: We all got riffs that we present. In the hands of James, who has such a powerfull right arm and playes everything with such an attitude and confidence, makes a good riff into a great riff. James is the type of musician who can take something to the next level without effort. Lars strenght is that he as a drummer likes to try out new stuff, he is not someone who is content with a normal drumkit. He will force himself, sometimes he takes water over his head. It can be a drumkit that takes him three hours to sett up, he pushes himself more than most drummers.
James played some drums, so he has a real good ear when it comes to beats, that makes it posible for them to build up ideas from the drummers point of view. Lars is the one who brings the progressive element; "Lets take a beat away from here, make this one heavyer and that one faster", he likes to do that, especially on this record.

Very interesting, but I think we'll have to wait a bit longer for the release of the new album. The boys are pretty busy with all their creativity and the postive effect of it is the ongoing effort, they're pushing each other. Everyone is coming up with new ideas and riffs and everything!
So expect a real masterpiece my friends großes Grinsen
