A short review of one of the greatest concerts i have ever seen |
 |
I had the pleasure to attend a very small but very good concert yesterday evening, clearly one of the best live-performances i have EVER seen. It's hard to find the right words for that, cause you must have been there yourself to feel the spirit of it. Anyway, (surprisingly) this wasn't something that has to do with metal, but a band that was formeed by following musicians (maybe anyone of you knows one or the other of them):
Lisa Fischer (voc) (the Rolling Stones, Luther Vandross)
Blondie Chaplin (voc, git) (the Rolling Stones, Beach Boys)
Nick Tremulis (voc, git) (NTO, Rick Danko,..)
Gerry Schuler (keyb) (Hallunzination Company)
Angus Thomas (b,voc) (Miles Davis, Buddy Miles)
Larry Beers (dr) (NTO, chicagos busiest drummer)
The whole thing took place in a small restaurant here in the beautiful city of Steyr, with a crowd of about 100 euro and a ticket price of 15 euros. I'm not bullshittin' here, but that must have been the very best livesound i ever heard from a band, even better than Metallica's. First i must say, i was a little bit sceptic what they would play, i thought they maybe would play a lot that i don't know and/or like, but it was everything other than that. They started a few minutes past 9 pm with a Rolling Stones Song i think, Lisa Fischer on vocals, incredible! This woman is soul in person and her voice is just the most powerful. Then they moved on with a few songs written by the bandmembers and with a great version of the Stones' "Miss You", which weren't worse at all, if not better. At the middle of the first set they pounded out a very sexy (
) version of proud Mary (originally by Tina Turner/CCR). After about an hour the first set was done and they said they will be back after a little break. Then the bandmembers went off stage and sat down by the tables in the restaurant, in the middle of all the normal people! That was incredible, you could just go to them and chat with 'em like with normal folks. Then, a beer and half an hour later, they went back on stage starting with a brilliant southern rock song from Nick Tremulis, followed by a few more songs from themselve and another Tina Turner Song. Between that something funny happened, lisa said "so glad to be here in your beautiful etablishment!", the crowd started chuckling, cause in fact it was not more than a normal "oberösterreichisches Wirtsheisl" (
)...recognizing the crowd laughing, she meant "we don't have anything like that in manhattan...but we don't even have fresh air in manhattan, so..."
.
After about a 3/4 hour into the second set they said now will come the last song, and i knew it could just be one song: Gimme Shelter from the Stones! Who has seen the Rolling Stones Live knows what i am talking about, Lisa Fischer gives this song just what it needs. People were jumping and clapping their hands, and i swear, the floor was bumping up and down. Then they bowed out and went off stage. But i thought "that couldn't have been all", in the same moment the crowd started chanting "we want more!" loud as there were 1000 people in the room. It went for about 5 Minutes, then the promotor of the concert & the restaurant came up and asked 3 times if we want some more, the people of xourse screaming "YEAHHH!!!!", louder every time. Of course they came back up for one more song, and that was one, i thought i can't believe that they're playing it, as the drummer started with a very familiar Drumbeat - Rock 'n Roll from Led Zeppelin! Now the people in the house weren't to hold and freakin' out. We all knew that this really was the end now, with the bandmembers thanking us again for our support, walking off the stage to the tables, and ordering some proper Schnaps made in Steyr. There was just one thing i didn't get yet, and that was an autograph from Lisa Fisher. Unfortunately i hadn't got any paper or something to write on, so i grabbed in my trouser pocket and pulled out my last 5 euro note. I went straight to Lisa, and askedher if she could do that for me. Laughing, because i held a banknote in my hand, she signed this now maybe most expensive 5-Euro note in the world.
So a great and very memorable concert and drinking night ended, that i will for sure never forget. I hope you enjoyed my little review, allthough you might not realize how great it really was. Just wanted to share that with you!
Cheerz, Andi
