Hail To England
REVIEW FROM THE BRITISH METAL HAMMER (ISSUE 169)
METALLICA/HIM/MACHINE HEAD/MASTODON
WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON
Wow! That's pretty much the collective response to a day when, all but ignored the media, metal invaded the newlook Wembley Stadium. Not so much for the sense of awe one might have been tempted to feel at the impressive surroundings, which is rendered less so when it's married to the general sense of confusion that reigns over almost everyone working at the new Stadium. No, for the wonderful sight of some 60-70.000 metal fans abd four fine metal bands rocking the place to its very foundations. Live Earth may have grabbed the headlines, but this is a wholly more impressive spectacle.
MASTODON [8] probably never even considered they one day might be on stage at Wembley opening for Metallica, and if it offers a slightly curious juxtaposition, having last seen them at the infinitely smaller Scala, they don't let it show, getting down to the gritty business of bludgeoning Wembley into submission, thanks to a very impressive sound.
Late additions MACHINE HEAD [9] equally probably never thought of playing Wembley, but take to the stage like veterans. Since the release of the excellent "The Blackening" they've been a band reborn, and with their climatic showing at the Golden Gods Awards still on everyone's mind, they not only repeat the feat of an intensely killer set, but go one better. They are, quite simply, jaw-droppingly awesome, and the Wembley crowd rises as one to show their appreciation. "You are fucking awesome", hollers Robb Flynn. No Robb, you are!
There's no way HIM [7] can follow that and the atmosphere dips as they start. However the wave of abuse metal fans could potentially give Ville Valo and his gang fails to fully materialise, and by the time the popular "Buried Alive By Love" and "Wicked Game" arrive at least some of the girls in the press box are dancing.
And so to METALLICA [9]. Still the biggest metal band on the planet, but one who've taken some deserved knocks of late. Which probably accounts for the lack of any material from the dire "St. Anger", and indeed only "The Memory Remains" from "Reload" in a set which delivers the finest material from "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets" in a manner which suggests here is a band intent on reminding everyone of exactly why they are the biggest metal band on the planet and banishing some less impressive, more recent memories.
The defiant manner in which the band rips into opener "Creeping Death" sets the tone for the bulk of the set, which -had they not wasted some paltry time with noodling solos, merely suggesting to show the band's age- would probably be most people's idea of a perfect Metallica set. A sterner test awaits when they deliver their latest studio offering, but as the stage explodes with pyros during "One" and "Enter Sandman", and they then deliver a final knock out one-two of "Wiplash" and "Seek And Destroy", it's clear the day belongs not just to Metallica, but to heavy itself.

RE: Hail To England
The ranking is out of 10 points btw. Reading the magazine for almost a year now, I've only seen a 10er once! That was for TOOL's performance at the Wembley Arena last year.
In my opinion the performance of Metallica @ Wembley deserves a 10er as well
